Vehicle HAL

The layer that mediates access between Android components and vehicle hardware interfaces.

Vehicle HAL, or Vehicle Hardware Abstraction Layer, is the interface that lets Android software talk to vehicle-specific hardware and signals without accessing them directly. It sits between the Android framework and components such as steering wheel buttons, climate controls, sensors, and status data, translating generic requests into hardware-specific operations.

This layer matters because it defines a major security boundary in Android-based cars. Well-designed apps should not be able to reach vehicle controls unless they pass through approved system services and permissions. In attacks, malware that stays in app space may still abuse the device for network relay or data theft, but compromise becomes more serious if it reaches privileged components that can touch the Vehicle HAL. Defenders watch for unexpected calls into vehicle services, privilege escalation, and weak separation between infotainment software and safety-relevant interfaces.
