Vendor consolidation

Reducing the number of suppliers in a category to simplify operations and purchasing.

Vendor consolidation is the practice of reducing the number of suppliers used in a category so operations, purchasing, and support become simpler. In cyber security, this can make security work easier: fewer tools to patch, fewer integrations to manage, and fewer contracts to review. It can also improve visibility if one platform handles logging, identity, or endpoint protection consistently.

The risk is concentration. When too much of a security stack depends on one provider, a single compromise, outage, or licensing change can affect many systems at once. Attackers often look for concentrated vendors such as cloud providers, managed service providers, identity platforms, and software suppliers because one breach can create broad access. Defenders balance consolidation with resilience by testing alternatives, keeping exit plans current, and avoiding a setup where one vendor becomes an untested single point of failure.
