Vendor reliance

Dependence on external suppliers or service providers for security, infrastructure, or business operations.

Vendor reliance is the dependence an organization has on external suppliers or service providers for security tools, cloud infrastructure, software, or business operations. It matters because every outsourced function expands the trust boundary: the company no longer controls every system, process, or person involved in protecting its environment.

In cyber security, vendor reliance can create concentration risk, where one provider, integration, or managed service becomes a single point of failure. Attackers may target suppliers to reach multiple customers, abuse weak third-party access, or exploit trust in vendor communications to push fraudulent requests. Defenders reduce this risk with supplier due diligence, contract and access controls, monitoring, and out-of-band verification for sensitive changes. Good vendor governance helps keep third-party convenience from turning into hidden exposure.
