Version Branch

A specific software line that may receive different fixes and support rules from the vendor.

A version branch is a specific software line, such as a release family or long-term support track, that follows its own update path. Vendors often assign different fixes, maintenance windows, and end-of-support rules to each branch, so two devices running the same product may not receive the same patch.

In cybersecurity, version branches matter because vulnerability remediation depends on them. A flaw may be fixed in one branch but require a different upgrade path, or may not be patched at all on an older unsupported line. Attackers benefit when organizations stay on outdated branches, since known weaknesses can remain exposed long after a fix exists elsewhere. Defenders use branch awareness to build accurate inventories, confirm support status, and choose the right upgrade or replacement plan for critical systems such as switches, firewalls, and servers.
