VHDL

A hardware description language used to model digital circuits before implementation.

VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) is a language used to describe digital hardware before it is built. Engineers use it to model logic, timing, and interfaces for devices such as FPGAs and ASICs, then simulate and synthesize that design into real circuits. It is closer to a circuit blueprint than a traditional software program.

In cybersecurity, VHDL matters because hardware bugs can become security bugs. A flawed state machine, weak reset logic, or unsafe interface handling can create crashes, data leaks, or exploitable behavior in the finished chip. Reusable VHDL blocks are valuable for speed and consistency, but they also need code review, simulation, and testbenches to catch mistakes before implementation. Attackers may also target hardware supply chains by slipping malicious or faulty logic into shared design code, while defenders use VHDL to build and verify secure hardware functions.
