Victim identification is the process of linking a security incident, claim, or indicator to a specific organization. In practice, analysts compare names, domains, internal logs, exposed services, and other evidence to decide whether a report really refers to the intended target. It is a core part of incident response because an incorrect match can send defenders after the wrong systems, distort risk assessments, or create unnecessary public concern.
In real attacks, victim identification often starts with weak signals such as a ransomware post, a leaked filename, a hash, or a company reference in a threat actor listing. Those clues can be useful, but they are not proof on their own. Defenders validate them with telemetry, asset ownership records, authentication events, and user reports before confirming impact. Good victim identification helps separate rumor from verified compromise and supports accurate triage, containment, and communication.
