Victim identifier

the domain or label attached to the claimed target.

A victim identifier is the domain, hostname, company name, or other label an attacker attaches to a claimed target in a public extortion post, leak site, or internal campaign note. In ransomware cases, it is often the first visible sign that a group says it has access to a victim’s environment. The identifier may be exact, abbreviated, or misleading, so it should be treated as a claim rather than proof of compromise.

In cyber security, victim identifiers matter because they help defenders map allegations to real assets, check whether the named domain is active, and review logs, backups, and exposed services for signs of intrusion. They also support triage when multiple organizations have similar names or subdomains. During an attack, a victim identifier can create pressure before evidence is verified, so security teams should validate the label carefully, confirm internal ownership, and use it as a trigger for investigation and containment-not as confirmation that data loss or breach has occurred.
