Victim outreach is the process of contacting affected users, customers, or organizations after a security incident so they can take action to reduce harm. It usually includes notification, guidance, and coordination with defenders to identify compromised systems, reset credentials, patch vulnerabilities, and remove malware. In cyber security, this matters because stopping an attacker’s infrastructure does not automatically fix the endpoints that were already infected or abused.
Outreach is common after botnet disruption, data theft, ransomware, or phishing campaigns. Security teams may use logs, sinkholes, abuse reports, or endpoint telemetry to find victims and warn them that a machine or account is still at risk. Good outreach helps expose hidden compromises, prevents reinfection, and turns a temporary disruption into real remediation. Without it, attackers can regain access through untouched hosts or stolen credentials.
