Victim verification

checking whether a claim matches internal evidence.

Victim verification is the process of checking whether a public claim about a target matches internal evidence. In cyber security, that means comparing an extortion post, leak-site listing, or threat report against logs, alerts, endpoint data, identity records, and backup status. The goal is to separate rumor, exaggeration, and true compromise.

This matters because attackers often use victim lists to create pressure before defenders know the full scope of an incident. A verified match can confirm unauthorized access, data exposure, or account abuse; a mismatch can show that the claim is incomplete or false. Analysts use victim verification to guide containment, improve incident reporting, and avoid overreacting to unproven statements. In practice, teams look for authentication anomalies, unusual data movement, signs of encryption, and evidence that systems were touched. Good verification is evidence-based, cautious, and fast.
