Victimology is the study of who is targeted in a cyber campaign, including the victims’ industry, region, role, size, or access to data. In security analysis, this pattern helps investigators understand an attacker’s intent and likely operating goals. For example, a cluster that repeatedly hits diplomats, government offices, or a specific country set may be showing strategic interest rather than random opportunistic abuse.
Victimology matters because it supports both attribution and defense, but it is not proof by itself. Analysts combine it with malware behavior, infrastructure, and delivery methods to build a stronger assessment. Defenders use victimology to prioritize detections, compare incidents, and spot when a campaign is expanding or shifting focus. In practice, it can reveal whether an intrusion is aimed at espionage, financial gain, or disruption.
