Virtual server

A BIG-IP configuration object that defines how traffic is handled and which policies apply.

In F5 BIG-IP, a virtual server is a configuration object that represents an application-facing traffic entry point. It defines how incoming connections are matched, where they are sent, and which features or policies are applied, such as access control, load balancing, or SSL handling.

This matters in security because the virtual server is often the control point between users and protected services. If an access policy is attached to it, that policy can determine whether traffic is allowed, challenged, or forwarded. Attackers may target this layer because compromise can expose authentication flows, session handling, and backend reachability. Defenders should review virtual server settings carefully, since unexpected policy changes, new routes, or unusual behavior here can signal abuse or misconfiguration.
