VirusTotal is a file and URL analysis platform that scans submitted content with many antivirus engines and other security tools, then aggregates the results into one report. Analysts use it to quickly gauge whether a file, domain, or link looks suspicious and to compare how different engines classify the same sample.
In cyber security, VirusTotal matters because it speeds up triage, hunting, and malware research. A detection on one or more engines can help confirm a threat, while a clean result can still be useful as a starting point for deeper inspection. However, a zero-detection result is only a snapshot in time, not proof that something is safe. Newly created malware, especially low-volume samples and social-engineering payloads, may appear undetected before signatures and behavioral rules catch up. Defenders use VirusTotal to check indicators of compromise, analyze suspicious downloads, and support incident response, but they still need telemetry, sandboxing, and manual review for strong conclusions.
