Voice biometrics

A method of checking identity using speech characteristics, which can be vulnerable to synthetic audio.

Voice biometrics is a way to verify identity by analyzing speech characteristics such as pitch, rhythm, accent, cadence, and other vocal traits. Systems may use it for authentication in call centers, banking, or access control. Unlike a password, it relies on a person’s voice pattern, which can be measured and compared against a stored voiceprint.

This matters in cyber security because a familiar voice is not strong proof of identity. Attackers can replay recorded speech, manipulate audio, or generate synthetic voice that sounds convincing enough to defeat human judgment and some automated checks. For that reason, voice biometrics should not be used as a standalone control for sensitive actions such as payments or account changes. Defenders pair it with liveness checks, device signals, callback verification, and out-of-band approval so that a voice can support authentication without becoming the only trust signal.
