VPN access

remote connectivity that can become a gateway into internal systems if abused.

VPN access is a remote connection that lets an authenticated user reach a private network through a virtual private network (VPN). Organizations use it to provide employees and other approved users with access to internal systems from outside the workplace.

Because a VPN can open trusted pathways into a network, compromised credentials or an exploitable VPN appliance may let attackers gain an initial foothold and seek further access. In real intrusions, attackers may target exposed VPN systems, then attempt to steal or misuse domain credentials to expand their reach. Defenders should promptly patch and securely configure VPN devices, enforce multifactor authentication, and review VPN and directory logs for unusual access or credential use.
