Vulnerability assessment is a structured process for finding, analyzing, and prioritizing security weaknesses in systems, applications, and networks. It usually combines automated scanning with manual review to identify missing patches, unsafe configurations, exposed services, weak permissions, and other conditions that increase risk.
In cyber security, it matters because defenders cannot fix everything at once. A good assessment ranks findings by impact, exploitability, and business context so teams can focus on the issues most likely to be used in an attack. In practice, assessments may be unauthenticated, or they may use authorized credentials to inspect deeper patch state and local configuration on managed assets.
Attackers benefit from the same weaknesses an assessment reveals, but defenders use the results to reduce exposure before exploitation happens. Vulnerability assessment often feeds into penetration testing, where selected weaknesses are safely validated, and into remediation work that closes the gaps.
