Wallet trail

A sequence of blockchain transactions that may help investigators follow the movement of cryptocurrency.

A wallet trail is the sequence of blockchain transactions linked to one or more cryptocurrency wallets. Because most public blockchains are transparent, investigators can often trace how funds move between addresses, exchanges, mixers, and intermediate wallets. This does not automatically reveal a real-world identity, but it can expose patterns such as laundering routes, cash-out points, or clusters of wallets used by the same operator.

In cyber security, wallet trails matter because they can connect separate parts of an intrusion: malware delivery, ransom payment, theft, and laundering. Defenders and analysts use on-chain tracing to follow stolen funds, map infrastructure, and support attribution when combined with endpoint, network, and exchange data. Attackers may try to break the trail by chain-hopping, using peel chains, or routing through services that obscure ownership, but those tactics still leave transaction history that can be analyzed.
