Wargaming

A structured exercise that explores conflict scenarios and possible responses.

Wargaming is a structured exercise that models conflict scenarios and possible responses. In cyber security, it is used to explore how attackers, defenders, and decision-makers might act under pressure. The goal is not to predict the future exactly, but to test assumptions, reveal weak points, and compare strategies before real operations begin.

Security teams use wargaming in tabletop exercises, incident response drills, red-team planning, and breach simulations. It helps organizations evaluate detection coverage, escalation paths, communication, and recovery steps. Attackers can also wargame defenses by rehearsing phishing, privilege escalation, or lateral movement to see which paths are likely to work. That is why wargaming matters: it turns uncertainty into a controlled environment where plans, tools, and human judgment can be assessed safely.
