Waste management

the long-term handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous byproducts produced by an industrial process.

Waste management is the controlled handling, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous byproducts created by industrial activity. In cyber security, it matters because these processes are usually run by software, sensors, access controls, and industrial networks. If those systems are weak, attackers can expose sensitive facility data, alter disposal records, disable alarms, or interfere with monitoring of dangerous materials.

Defenders treat waste-management systems as part of critical operational technology. Good practice includes network segmentation, strong identity controls, tamper-evident logs, secure inventory tracking, and continuous monitoring of pumps, tanks, and environmental sensors. Cyber attacks may not target the waste itself, but they often target the digital systems that track where it is, who can move it, and whether it is being stored safely. Reliable waste management is therefore both a safety issue and a security issue.
