Waste stream

The path a discarded material follows through collection, sorting, processing, or landfill systems.

A waste stream is the route discarded material takes through collection, sorting, processing, and, where applicable, landfill. The route determines which materials a system can actually handle: a product labeled compostable, for example, may require specific processing conditions and may not be accepted by every local facility. For PLA and other materials, disposal claims should be checked against the waste services available where the item is discarded.

Waste streams matter in cybersecurity when discarded equipment or storage media may contain sensitive data. Devices can pass through collection, resale, recycling, or destruction, and each handoff creates a chance of loss or unauthorized access if data is not securely erased or the media physically destroyed. Organizations should account for the full disposal route in their asset and data-handling procedures, rather than treating disposal as a final step with no security implications.
