Water use efficiency (WUE)

A data center metric for how much water is used per unit of IT power consumption.

Water use efficiency, or WUE, is a data center metric that shows how much water is consumed for a given amount of IT power use, often expressed as liters per kilowatt-hour. It helps operators compare cooling designs, site locations, and operational practices. A lower WUE generally means the facility needs less water to support the same computing load.

In cyber security, WUE matters because security platforms increasingly run in the cloud alongside AI, logging, detection, and analytics workloads. Buyers may review WUE when selecting vendors for SIEM, threat hunting, or AI-assisted defense tools, especially when cost, compliance, and sustainability are part of procurement. It also matters operationally: large bursts of inference, search, or repeated API calls can increase compute demand and indirectly raise water and power consumption. Defenders use WUE as one signal of infrastructure efficiency, while attackers may exploit expensive workloads to drive up resource use and strain capacity.
