Web-facing exposure

an internet-reachable service that may increase attack surface.

Web-facing exposure is any service, application, or interface that is reachable from the public internet. Common examples include login portals, file transfer services, VPN gateways, APIs, and administrative consoles. Because these systems can be contacted by anyone on the network, they expand the attack surface and are frequent targets for scanning, brute-force attempts, exploitation of known vulnerabilities, and credential attacks.

In cyber security, web-facing exposure matters because even a single misconfigured or unpatched service can become the first foothold in a broader intrusion. Attackers often look for exposed remote access tools, outdated web servers, or cloud services that should not be public. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying internet-reachable assets, patching quickly, enforcing strong authentication, limiting access where possible, and monitoring logs for unusual requests or failed logins.
