A wet lab is a laboratory environment where scientists work with physical biological materials such as cells, tissues, bacteria, blood, or purified proteins. The term contrasts with an in silico workflow, where hypotheses are tested on a computer rather than in a real experimental setting. Wet-lab work includes assays, culture experiments, microscopy, and other hands-on procedures that produce direct biological evidence.
In drug discovery, wet-lab validation matters because a model’s prediction is only a hypothesis until it survives real experiments. AI can rank targets or generate candidate molecules, but wet-lab tests reveal whether those ideas actually bind, change biology, or cause toxicity. This makes the wet lab a key defense against false positives, weak assumptions, and overconfident computational results. In practice, researchers use wet-lab experiments to confirm promising outputs, reject bad ones early, and build the evidence chain needed before any clinical decision.
