wfreerdp is the Windows client entry point for FreeRDP, an open-source Remote Desktop Protocol implementation. It is used to launch and manage RDP sessions from a Windows host, including optional features such as clipboard redirection and other virtual channels.
In cyber security, wfreerdp matters because the client does not only send input to a remote machine; it also parses data received from the server. That makes it a network-facing trust boundary. If a malicious or compromised RDP server can feed crafted clipboard or channel data to wfreerdp, bugs such as heap buffer overflows may lead to crashes, memory corruption, or in severe cases remote code execution. Defensively, administrators should disable clipboard sharing and other unneeded channels, restrict RDP connections to trusted servers, and keep FreeRDP builds patched.
