Wi-Fi radio

The wireless hardware used to send and receive Wi-Fi signals.

A Wi-Fi radio is the hardware in a device that transmits and receives wireless signals. It includes radio-frequency circuitry and typically works with an antenna, firmware, and a driver to communicate over Wi-Fi bands using defined channels and power limits.

In cyber security, the radio is part of a device’s attack surface: software and firmware control how it operates, while flaws or unexpected capabilities may affect what signals it can process or transmit. In real attacks, adversaries can use wireless radios to observe or interfere with networks when within range; defenders can monitor wireless activity, keep device firmware updated, and restrict access to radio configuration. A radio’s theoretical capabilities do not by themselves prove that a device can operate outside its intended modes or regulatory limits.
