Windows Vault

A Windows storage area used for saving credentials and other secrets.

Windows Vault is a protected storage area in Windows used to save credentials and other secret data, such as passwords, network logins, and some application-specific authentication material. It is designed to make sign-in easier by letting trusted components retrieve saved secrets when needed, rather than forcing users to re-enter them every time.

In cyber security, Windows Vault matters because anything that stores reusable credentials becomes a target once malware is running on the host. A trojan or post-exploitation tool may try to read Vault data through Windows APIs, extract secrets from the user profile, or abuse the same account context that can unlock the store. If successful, an attacker may gain access to remote services, internal systems, or other accounts without needing to break encryption or guess passwords. Defenders watch for unusual access to credential stores, restrict unnecessary saved logins, and treat Vault access combined with remote administration activity as a strong compromise signal.
