Advanced Data Protection (ADP) is Apple’s higher-security cloud mode that expands end-to-end encryption to more iCloud data, including device backups. In this model, the keys needed to decrypt protected content are designed to stay on trusted devices rather than with Apple, which reduces provider-side access.
ADP matters because cloud backups often contain the most sensitive material on a phone: messages, photos, app data, and device settings. For defenders, stronger encryption lowers exposure if a cloud account, provider system, or legal process is targeted. For attackers or investigators, it changes the access path: if the backup is end-to-end encrypted, the service provider cannot simply hand over readable data or decrypt it on request. The only practical route is usually through the user’s trusted devices, recovery methods, or the account itself.
