An autonomous AI agent is a system that can decide what to do next, call tools, and carry out tasks with limited human input. Unlike a simple chatbot, it may read data, query APIs, write files, trigger workflows, or interact with production services as part of a goal-driven loop.
In cyber security, this matters because the agent’s permissions become part of the attack surface. If an attacker abuses the agent, or if the agent is given overly broad access, a single compromise can expose secrets, internal data, or operational systems. Defenders reduce risk by tightly scoping tokens, isolating production from testing, logging tool use, and revoking credentials quickly. In practice, secure agent design is about controlling what the software can touch, not just what it can say.
