Continuous telemetry

Ongoing automated signals that reveal the current state of a system or control.

Continuous telemetry is the ongoing collection of automated signals about a system, security control, or environment. Examples include whether multifactor authentication is enabled for required accounts, whether endpoint protection is reporting in, and whether cloud configurations or backup settings have changed.

In cyber security, these signals help teams detect control failures and configuration drift between periodic reviews. Insurers or organizations may use telemetry to assess whether safeguards remain effective, rather than relying only on questionnaires or one-time attestations. Telemetry can also support incident detection, but it must be interpreted carefully: a reported control status does not by itself prove that the control prevents attacks. Organizations should define what data is collected, who can access it, and how alerts or findings will be acted on.
