A fake account is a fraudulent or disposable account created to look legitimate while hiding the real operator. Attackers use it to browse, collect data, send messages, or test security controls without tying activity back to a known identity. In cyber security, fake accounts matter because they reduce visibility: logs may show normal user behavior even when the access is automated or abusive.
Fake accounts appear in scraping, fraud, spam, credential attacks, and social engineering. They can blend into public platforms, abuse trial systems, or bypass trust checks that rely on account age or profile completeness. Defenders counter them with stronger identity verification, rate limiting, device fingerprinting, anomaly detection, and monitoring for repetitive access patterns that suggest coordinated harvesting or evasion.
