Hot storage

fast but expensive storage used for recent or high-priority data.

Hot storage is a fast storage tier designed for data that must be accessed quickly, such as recent security logs or records needed for active investigations. It typically costs more per unit of capacity than slower archival storage.

In security operations, keeping every log in hot storage for too long can drive up costs without improving detection or response. Teams can manage this tradeoff by prioritizing high-value telemetry, setting retention periods, and moving older data to less expensive tiers when immediate access is no longer essential. Attackers do not use hot storage as an attack technique; it is an infrastructure choice that affects how quickly defenders can search evidence during an incident.
