LTS means Long Term Support, a release model designed for stability, predictable updates, and extended maintenance. In an LTS branch, vendors keep delivering security fixes and critical bug patches for longer than in short-lived releases, while avoiding frequent feature changes that could disrupt production systems.
In cyber security, LTS matters because patch availability is part of defense. Servers, desktops, and cloud images that stay on supported LTS versions are easier to secure, audit, and patch on schedule. Attackers often target systems that fall behind on updates or move off support, because unmaintained software is more likely to contain known vulnerabilities. Defenders use LTS releases to reduce version drift, simplify testing, and plan upgrades with rollback options before support ends.
