Operational automation

Using software to reduce manual effort in repetitive parts of an attack or defense workflow.

Operational automation is the use of software to reduce manual effort in repetitive parts of a cyber operation. In an attack workflow, that can mean automating email sorting, lure drafting, translation, file triage, command execution, or log review. In a defense workflow, it can mean alert enrichment, phishing triage, account suspension, or containment steps.

This matters because repeated tasks consume time and create bottlenecks. Automation increases throughput, helps operators scale, and can make malicious activity look more consistent and harder to spot. In espionage campaigns, it may support faster phishing preparation and quicker analysis after initial access, without changing the underlying techniques. Defenders use the same idea for good: security orchestration, email filtering, identity checks, and post-click monitoring all rely on automation to react faster than a human-only workflow.
