A PHP driver is a software component that enables PHP applications to connect to and work with MongoDB. The MongoDB PHP Driver includes an extension loaded by the PHP runtime, allowing application code and frameworks to send database operations and receive results. It is distinct from the MongoDB server itself.
Drivers are part of an application’s attack surface because defects in them can affect the applications that use them. In a real attack, a vulnerable driver could potentially disrupt service availability, depending on the flaw and conditions; this does not by itself imply data theft or compromise of the database server. Defenders should inventory the PHP extensions actually loaded, check their versions against vendor security updates, and patch affected components.
