Power BI is Microsoft’s business intelligence platform for building reports, dashboards, and semantic models. It turns source data into reusable metrics and visualizations, usually through shared datasets, DAX calculations, and governed publishing. In security terms, that makes Power BI more than a presentation tool: it can become a control point for sensitive finance, customer, and operational data.
Power BI matters because the way a report is modeled affects who can see what and how reliable the numbers are. Weak row-level security, overly broad sharing, or poor sensitivity labeling can expose data beyond its intended audience. Attackers may abuse stolen report links, misconfigured workspaces, or delegated permissions to reach business data, while defenders use least privilege, access reviews, and sensitivity labels to reduce that risk. Strong governance in Power BI helps keep analytics useful without turning dashboards into an accidental data leak.
