Record type

The DNS field that defines how a name resolution entry is stored, such as A or TXT.

A DNS record type identifies what kind of information is stored for a name, such as an A record for an IPv4 address, AAAA for IPv6, MX for mail delivery, or TXT for arbitrary text. It tells resolvers how to interpret the answer returned for a query, and it is one of the core fields that makes DNS flexible.

Record type matters in security because attackers can abuse unusual or overused types to move data through DNS. For example, DNS tunneling often relies on TXT records or other writable types to hide commands, identifiers, or encoded payloads inside ordinary-looking lookups. Defenders watch for unexpected record types, mismatches between the queried name and the type requested, and repeated queries that carry encoded data. In logs and passive DNS, record types help analysts spot covert channels and separate normal resolution from suspicious traffic.
