A release asset is a downloadable file published alongside a software release. It may be a compiled program, installer, package, or other file intended for users to install or run. Because users often rely on these files rather than building software from source, release assets are a key part of the software supply chain.
If an attacker gains access to a publisher account or release system, they may replace or add a malicious asset on an otherwise trusted download page. Running that file can expose data and credentials available to the process. Defenses include restricting and protecting release-publishing accounts, signing assets, and verifying signatures or checksums through a trusted channel. When a release is suspected of being tainted, users should remove it, check for unusual activity, and rotate secrets it could access.
