Security leadership is the work of setting an organization’s defensive direction, choosing priorities, and making people accountable for managing cyber risk. It includes aligning security plans with business needs, guiding teams and resources, and helping decision-makers understand tradeoffs. A CISO commonly leads this work, often with support from deputies and other security managers.
Effective leadership matters because security depends on coordinated decisions, not only technical controls. In practice, leaders establish policies, oversee risk management, prepare for incidents, and work across departments to make protections fit day-to-day operations. Their experience can inform judgment, but titles or career paths alone do not prove that an organization is secure; defenses also require capable teams, clear responsibilities, and ongoing review.
