Tool Permission

The level of access an AI agent has to APIs, files, or external services.

Tool permission is the level of access an AI agent has to APIs, files, databases, network endpoints, or other external services. Unlike a plain chatbot, an agent may be allowed to read, write, send requests, or execute actions through tools. Those permissions determine what the agent can actually do if it is prompted, misconfigured, or manipulated by an attacker.

In cyber security, tool permission matters because excessive access can turn a model error into a real incident. If an agent has broad credentials or unrestricted outbound access, a malicious prompt may trigger data exposure, unwanted file changes, or requests to live systems. Defenders reduce this risk by applying least privilege, separating test and production accounts, scoping tokens, logging every tool call, and reviewing permissions whenever integrations change. Strong tool permission design helps keep agentic systems useful without letting simulated decisions become real-world actions.
