vCenter Server

VMware’s centralized management platform for hosts, virtual machines, and access control.

vCenter Server is VMware’s centralized management platform for ESXi hosts, virtual machines, clusters, and access control. It acts as the control plane for a virtual environment, so one instance can create, move, power on, or restrict many workloads at once.

In cyber security, that concentration of authority makes vCenter Server a high-value target. Attackers look for weaknesses such as authentication bypass, directory traversal, or stolen admin credentials to gain broad control over infrastructure, tamper with logs, or reach connected hosts and VMs. Defenders treat it as critical infrastructure: keep it patched, limit administrative access, isolate it on a protected management network, and monitor for unusual login or configuration activity. If vCenter is compromised, the impact can extend far beyond a single server.
